Lakhi Chand Jain is a Mumbai based facilitator and ‘Maestro’ of the Mandana. By profession, he is a multidisciplinary designer, writer and researcher. He learnt Mandana from his grandmother (Late) Smt. Ratan bai and mother Smt. Shakuntala bai when he was just eight-years-old. He is a highly spiritual person and senior fellow in the art of Mandana for the past 25 years. He has been accolades with 3 National awards including the highest youth felicitation; the National Youth Award (1990-91). Also, last year he has been felicitated by the Marudhara Samman (2016- 17).
He is the first man to paint contemporary Mandanas on canvas using modern means. He is revivalist of Mandana and he has given a new lease of life to this art. In the year 2004, ‘India Today’ had published a full page story in the ‘Offtrack’ column on his work. They stated that- As Lakhi Chand Jain’s agile fingers trace an intricate pattern of white chalk across a red, earth-smeared background; traditional Rajasthani Mandana art comes alive, reminiscent of the designs on the walls and floors of rural houses in the Land of Kings.
This statement illustrates to us the depth of Lakhi Chand’s Mandana work. He is the former senior faculty of design. He has conducted the workshops and lecture sessions for the fashion & accessory design students of NIFT as a guest faculty. For the past, so many years, he has been facilitating workshop/weekend retreats on Mandana at all across India. Last year, He has been invited to the live demonstration of Mandana at WLHF-2018 (4th World Living Heritage Festival)
